PM Urges Civil Society Groups to Drop Double Standards Over Government

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen has warned some civil society organizations receiving funding from abroad to stop the double standard in situations involving the Cambodian government. He said such organizations seem to only see one side of the story.

The Prime Minister made these remarks by comparing two different cases, one involving his sister-in-law and the other involving a former journalist for VOD.

The Prime Minister stated that the online journalist, Pheng Vannak, was widely condemned by civil society organizations and NGOs with foreign backing for insulting and inciting misogynistic hate against the female journalist from VOD who authored the article that mistakenly stated that Lt. Gen. Hun Manet signed off on the provision of aid to Turkey on behalf of his father.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister said these same organizations had been silent when his sister-in-law received many insults following her death.

"What I can’t get over is my sister-in-law, after her death, she was insulted thousands of times, compared to Pheng Vannak talking about the VOD reporter," wrote the Prime Minister. "They not only insulted my sister-in-law, but they even insulted my wife, my family while still mourning and shedding tears for my sister, mother, grandmother, and aunt who passed away without saying a word. Do these 40 organizations understand this? Why keep quiet [in those situations], or are these organizations set up just to protect the opposition?”

Prime Minister Hun Sen instructed the organizations in question to remember this matter and stop holding double standards when considering matters that involve the Royal Government.

Prime Minister Hun Sen posted this message through his official Telegram Channel past midnight on Friday, 17 February 2023, at 1:49 am.
